What is dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are any substances or materials which, due to their properties, pose potential risks to health, safety or the environment if they are not handled, stored or transported properly. These risks may arise from the chemical, physical or biological properties of the substances. Dangerous goods are therefore usually transported in special vehicles.

What all falls under dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods include, for example, chemicals, gases, flammable liquids, explosive substances, infectious substances or radioactive materials. These are divided into different classes and subgroups, according to their hazard characteristics and properties. The correct classification is important in order to prevent serious accidents through safe transport.

The labelling of dangerous goods must have the following features:

Dangerous goods must be clearly marked during transportation and storage.

  • 4-digit UN number (e.g. UN 1203 for gasoline)
  • Orange RID marking on rectangular plates on the transport vehicle
  • Classification of the dangerous goods class by means of a risk label on the transported goods or containers
